This year, Red Security Systems conducted the first of its annual customer surveys, and some of the results may come as a surprise to many.
For example, for commercial clients, preventing theft or criminal damage is not the top reason for investing in security. In fact, the top reason cited is ‘operations risk assessment and improvement’. This is closely followed by a desire to ensure employee health and safety. Prevention of theft and trespassing or criminal damage surprisingly are ranked third and fourth, respectively.

The need to put Health & Safety at the top of the agenda is perhaps not surprising given that in 2020/2021 more than 440,000 people sustained an injury at work[1] (resulting in over £26m in HSE fines in 2021[2]) with significant loss of earnings for employees (employees lost on average 8 days per injury)[3].
Red Security MD, Yann Maciejewski comments: “The construction industry in particular faces major challenges, not just in securing sites against theft and trespassing, but in ensuring the Health and Safety of its construction teams. The construction industry had the highest number of fatal accidents in 2022[1] and we have seen a significant increase in the demand for temporary and easily deployable security systems for remote construction sites.”
For domestic clients, reassurance seems to be a key benefit and driver behind installing a security system, with 9 out of 10 customers strongly agreeing their system gives them peace of mind. Additionally, intruder alarm customers gave an average score of 9.1/10 for the extent to which their system is an effective deterrent against criminal activity. This rises to 10/10 on average for CCTV customers.

The survey also gives some insight into why customers choose certain suppliers (insight which can no doubt be applied to many other industries) – the top reason for customers choosing Red Security was reputation or recommendation, closely followed by value for money. Speed of response was also a top reason (ranked third out of six reasons), demonstrating that customer service is still a top consideration for the vast majority of clients.
